Jason Old will discuss his experiences as one of the founders of CAN Fútbol Foundation (CANFF) in Honduras during WKU’s annual Paul G. and Ernestine G. Hatcher Modern Language Lecture Series.

Old’s lecture — Changing Lives through Soccer, Spanish and Service – will begin at 4 p.m. Nov. 1 at the Garrett Conference Center auditorium. The event is free and open to the campus and community; a reception will follow.

CANFF administers programs that use soccer to encourage Honduran youth to make positive choices about school and life. According to Old, CANFF is built on the “belief that all youth deserve the opportunity to grow and develop in every facet of their lives and should not be hindered by economic status.”

After playing semi-professionally in Roatan, Honduras, Old earned an master’s degree in Latin American, Caribbean, and Latino Studies at the University of South Florida, and teaches Spanish language and cultures courses at Southeastern University in Lakeland, Fla. He is writing a book titled Anthrotourist: An Improvised Journey Through Latin America set to appear with Anthrotourism Press this fall.

The annual Paul G. and Ernestine G. Hatcher Modern Language Lecture Series is made possible through a gift by Dr. Graham Hatcher in honor of his parents, Dr. Paul G. and Ernestine G. Hatcher. Dr. Paul G. Hatcher, Professor of Spanish, taught at Western Kentucky University for 27 years and served as Head of the Department of Modern Languages from 1959 to 1965. He was the first Dean of Potter College and also the first Director of International Programs at WKU.
